The project Behind the cowl is based on the Dc Comic series Battle for the cowl by Tony Daniel. In 2021 the main story was rewritten by Carolin H. In collaboration with the main cast and is based on the seven stages of grief (by ….) Each episode is named after one of the stages and describes how the characters deal with a a loss of a certain person.
The story we tell deals with a topic that every person can refer to and we try to show possible ways of coping with a deep impact such as a loss of a very important person in their life.
For this project we split our group up in several departments such as: Marketing, Location and contracts, script, graphics, camera, music and of course make-up. To work as professional as possible with a very low budget since the project had no collaboration partners and everything was paid by The producer and main cast.
As for the locations the group agreed on shooting at real locations if possible instead of closed buildings or studios across whole Germany- which is a huge organization and financial effort.
Regular video calls helped to get the crew together and share insights, problems and goals we achieved.
In the same year the very first costume fitting was held and we realized that there are a lot differences between cosplay costumes and functional movie costumes. So some of us returned to the sketchbook afterwards and were very thankful for this knowledge.
A little later another department popped up named: Fight club — basics and combat training is essential but we soon realized that specific training for specific scenes makes much more sense.
Very soon after our very first pitches with potential contact partners for some locations we got great opportunities to shoot first scenes in Berlin (2022) but also in Augsburg (Bavaria)(2023). The response to our very first shoots was overwhelming and motivates us to move on since our planes seemed to work and we made progress.
Unfortunately some after very emotional incidents in 2021 and 2023 we had to pause the project and give some crew members time to heal and recover before we could move on. The actually topic of our project became real for some of us but we hold together – not just as a filming crew but as friends that we’ve become.
With a lot time and understanding we managed to move on and to shoot more scenes in the second half of 2023. Furthermore first singers and voice actors joined the team and we even became international with crew members from Austria, the Netherlands and even the USA.
Our crew began to grow more and more and also professional make-up artists, film composer and actors joined our team but we also realized that our budget would not be enough to hold up to the standards we wanted to stick too. So we started an indiegogo campaign in early 2024.
Let’s see were this is going – we are all very exciting and are working like crazy to make this project come true which is only possible thanks to the positive response, understanding and help from the crew, contact partners, friends and fans.
